Gob Squad & Institutet: Workshop Presentations

Gob Squad (Sarah Thom and Simon Will) and Institutet & Nya Rampen (Anders Carlsson & Rasmus Slätis) present the results of their workshops via video. Gob Squad artists meet Theatre Academy students, and introduce their working methods: generating and structuring material, performing and writing text and using a video camera. The main focus of the “Interventions in hostile environments” workshop by Carlsson is to explore interventionism in public spaces as an art form.

Juha Valkeapää & Taito Hoffrén: Ten Journeys to a Place where Nothing Happens

A motor home is parked in the middle of the city next to a large army tent. In the tent two men make pancakes and welcome guests. Musician Taito Hoffrén and artist Juha Valkeapää tell tens of stories with and with out words, breezily and at a leisurely pace. The tent is a space for being and doing, living and dreaming.

Peeter Jalakas & Von Krahli Teater (EST): The Magic Flute. Remixed and Explained

Originally “The Magic Flute” – an alchemical tragedy – featured the whole of Von Krahl Theatre’s troupe and a number of guest actors and dancers. A little while later there were supposed to be additional performances at the festival Baltoscandal. However, by this time the Von Krahl cast had tied itself to independent projects outside the troupe and were forced to say no to the director. The theatre director’s one-man show – where he was assisted only by the theatre’s technical staff – became at times even more popular than the initial play. In the version presented in Helsinki, the manly team is complemented by the musicians Eva Alkula and Sirje Mõttus.

Amund Sjølie Sveen (NOR): The Norwegian Way – an introduction to the Oil for Art program

Norway is the richest country in the world. It is also rated the most peaceful country, it has the most well-functioning state, it has won the Eurovision song contest, and it is probably the best place on earth to be an artist – economically speaking. It is all because of the oil. The Norwegian Way is a dive into the self image of Norway and the problem of the oil, the possible connection between money and happiness, and an exploration of what possibility art has to change the world.

Hans Rosenström: Three Apart

Hans Rosenström`s work is a narrative sound installation based on the multi-layered story of Samantha Smith, a 10-year-old American who was officially invited to the Soviet Union as a guest of Yuri Andropov, `Goodwill Ambassador’ in 1983. Rosenström`s work takes Samantha`s story as starting point for a shared moment between the spectators.

Leif Holmstrand (SWE): Wearing the Territorial (Down)

In his new piece Leif Holmstrand blurs the boundaries between the performance and sculpture, living body and installation, process and object. “Swedish artist Leif Holmstrand’s oeuvre is filled with crocheted and knitted sculptures, terrifying performances, washing line installations and dangling babies. He also writes excellent poetry – an artist and writer who puts Malmö on the Sweden Maps and in the very near future on the world map!” (Beautiful/Decay)

Dood Paard (HOL): medEia

medEia is a contemporary version of the Medea myth about love and its many truths and lies. The story is told from the perspective of the chorus: the chorus is a permanent witness to the dramatic proceedings but unable to intervene in the tragedy. The text is interlaced with lyrics of American and English pop songs. These lyrics are, like Greek mythology, part of our collective memory.

DQ is the Gnab Collective’s third production. It is based on the Spanish classic Don Quixote, but uses Miguel de Cervantes’ novel as a starting point for a process researching the friendship and power relationship between two individuals.

Super Night Shot is a multi screen video event filmed one hour before the audience arrives. The film contains no cuts and is produced by four performers in the streets of the host city. In the movie the city becomes a film set, a place in which cigarette butts in the gutter are props and everyone is a potential extra, friend, lover or liberator. The audience waiting to see the film play a part in the final scene as our heroes return home from their fantastical mission.

Sacred City is a collective quest for an experience of the sacred in the urban environment. Ten artists from Helsinki and Tokyo set out to reinvent the concept, approaching it from a personal, firsthand perspective rather than through the prevailing religious and cultural contexts. The performance can be seen as their vision of a contemporary temple – a sacred place that is simultaneously subjective, cross-cultural and weblike. Work-in-progress.

“Who are you? What’s your name? How old are you? Where do you come from? Are you a journalist? Do you love me? Are you Dutch? Portuguese? Do you even know where that is, Portugal? What they speak there? What do you speak, actually? Can you even speak? Why are you here? What were you doing in Pakistan? If you cooperate with us you’ll be able to sleep in peace.” Five interrogators with kitschy costumes want to hear the truth they say they already know – they just want to hear the words from prisoner’s mouth.

Teater 90º: Aniara – A Review of Man in Time and Space

Aniara is a poem of science fiction written by the Swedish Nobel writer Harry Martinson. It consists of 103 cantos and relates the tragedy of a space ship which after an accident is ejected from the solar system and into an existential struggle. Teater 90º is a young actors’ collective from Helsinki.
